Montgomery First SDA Church Builds Community-Focused Playground for Children

Montgomery, AL - 4/14/2025

The Montgomery First Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) Church has taken a meaningful step toward enriching the lives of children and families in the community by enhancing it's playground on its church grounds. With a vision rooted in compassion, service, and growth, the church is creating a space where children can learn, play, and connect in a safe, nurturing environment.

The enhanced playground initiative reflects the church's commitment to holisitc ministry - caring not only for spiritual well-being but also for the physical and social development of the community's youngest members. "We believe that play is a vital part of a child's growth," said Pastor Dwayne Campbell, and led by it's Children's Ministry leader, Katie Serrano, leaders from the church have come together to build and put together this wonderful project. The church has also partnered with The Wellness Coalition to make this project a success. "This playground is an extension of our mission to serve and uplift our church and community."

A Vision Taking Shape

Planning for the playground began with the concern of church members and its leadership. Having an accessible outdoor recreational space for children-both those within the congregation and the surrounding community. Fundraising efforts, including church-wide donations, sponsorship, and grants from the community has helped bring the project to life.

Designed with safety and inclusivity in mind, the playground features age-appropriate equipment, shaded seating areas for parents and guardians, and ADA-compliant structures to ensure children of all abilities can enjoy the space.

Building More than a Playground

Beyond just a fun place for kids, the playground will serve as a hub for youth programming, Vacation Bible School activities, health and wellness events, and community outreach efforts. It's a part of the church's broader initiative to make its grounds a welcoming center of connection, healing, and joy for all ages.

"Children are the heart of every vibrant community," (anonymous). We are living up to the mission and the vision of our church to "Love God, Love People".

Looking Ahead

The church plans to host a dedication ceremony and community celebration once construction is complete, inviting local families, neighbors, and supporters to join in the festivities. Volunteers are still welcome to participate as we continue to put together our wonderful playground.

As Montgomery First SDA Church moves forward with this exciting project, it continues to exemplify what it means to be a place where faith and service intersect - where the laughter of children and the love of a caring community come together under the open sky.
